4 Ways To Use Extra Space In The Garden

Big garden spaces are often hard to come by when you’re looking at houses but if you’ve managed to get one, you might be faced with another problem; what do you do with all that space. Before you moved in, you thought that having a massive garden was great, but now that you’re faced with the reality of it, it’s probably left empty. If you don’t do anything with it, it’ll soon turn into an overgrown mess that looks awful. So, what do you do with all of that extra garden space?

Let It Grow

I know I said that an overgrown mess was a bad thing, but it doesn’t have to be if you do it right. Letting the plants do their own thing is a big trend in gardening at the moment but it takes a little more work than you think. If you let the whole garden grow out, it’ll look messy, but if you take one small section of the garden and fill it with plants that look good when they’re given free roam, you can create a great natural looking section that contrasts with the rest of the well kept garden. It’s also a great way to attract wildlife to the garden as well.

Outbuildings

If you’ve got a big area of the garden that’s not being used for anything, you could consider putting a building out there. A wooden or steel building is perfect for storage or even as a hosting area where you can keep food and drinks for garden parties. You shouldn’t need any planning permission if it’s only a small building and nobody will be living in there but it’s best to check with your neighbors if they’re going to be able to see it from their house or garden.

Patio

One of the biggest problems is that it takes a lot of upkeep, especially if it’s all lawn. It’ll take ages to mow all that grass or prune plants if you just fill the whole area. Why not put a patio over half of the garden instead? It breaks up the garden and creates multi function areas. If you’ve got a patio in the garden, you can use the area for entertaining and put some garden furniture on there.

Kids Equipment

If you’ve got a young family, this is the perfect opportunity to do something great for them. Get some kids play equipment and put it in the empty space in the garden. It’ll be a great way to encourage them to play outside more, which is difficult for parents these days. It also means that they’ll be playing at home where you can keep an eye on them, rather than outside where you can’t always be sure that they’re safe.

When you’ve got a big garden it can be a blessing but it can also be a curse. All of that extra space is a bit of a pain to maintain and if you’re wasting it, it’ll just get overgrown and look terrible. Instead of letting that happen, just try some of these alternatives instead.
