5 DIY Decoration Ideas for a Summer Party

Summer is the perfect time to throw a party. Whether it’s for a special occasion, like a birthday, or a “just because” pool party, it’s always fun to get together with friends and family. You may not be traveling to the 597 square miles of Oahu, Hawaii, but you can still have fun in your own backyard. And while food and entertainment are certainly major elements of a party, you can’t forget about decorations. So if you’re hosting a summer party, here are a few DIY decoration ideas.

Napkin Garland

If you’re stocking up on party napkins for your upcoming bash, they can double as decoration! Take some napkins of various colors and patterns and drape them over some twine or string. Then cut a fringe on the bottom of the napkins. Doing this with a variety of colors and patterns can make for an eye-catching and fun garland. Hang up the garland on a fence, over doorways, or even on a table. This fun garland can be a great option in open areas because it isn’t closed off — the open area will allow for increased visibility and airflow, especially when hanging multiple of them.

Can Lanterns

When your party is taking place in the evening, you’re going to need some lighting. But instead of buying string lights, why not make your own lanterns? All you need is some old tin cans, a nail, and a hammer. First, start by painting the cans if you desire to do so. Once the paint is dry, take the nail and hammer and pound holes in the can — you can do this in a fun pattern or just randomly. Once the holes have been made, put a tea light candle inside, or a mini LED candle, and you’ll have some star-like latterns to light up the yard.

Balloon Arch

Balloons are one of the most popular party decorations. But instead of just blowing balloons up and trying them somewhere, you should make your own balloon arch. You need to start with a base — you can either create the arch on a wall, like the side of a house, or use wire or foam to create a free-standing arch. You can use some air filled balloons and simply tie or tape them to the base in the shape of an arch. This is a great decoration because it requires few materials and can be an attention-grabbing piece.

Wooden Drink Stirrers

If you’re going to be serving some refreshing beverages at your party, you should provide some drink stirrers for your guests. Mini wood blocks are great for drink stirrers because you can paint them however you’d like — you can even personalize one for each guest. So gather some wooden cubes, no bigger than 1 1/2 inches, and drill a small hole in the bottom. Paint or decorate the blocks in colors or designs to match the party theme. Once they’re finished, stick a skewer into the hole in the block and you have some great drink stirrers.

Large Signs

No party decor is complete without some big, fun signs. You may not be in Hollywood, but who says you can’t have your own “Hollywood” sign in your yard? You’ll need a projector to make this sign. Start by printing out a word — words and phrases like “Fiesta”, “It’s Party Time”, or even just “Welcome” all work great. Then choose the place where you want the word and project your printed out word onto the area. Trace the outline and decorate! If 82% of shoppers make decisions based on signage in stores, a DIY sign for your party will definitely be a hit.

You don’t have to spend a ton of time or money decorating for your party. When you consider that $1.9 billion is spent on flowers for mother’s day, spending a few bucks on fresh blooms for your summer party doesn’t seem so bad. These simple DIY projects will help make your party great with minimal effort.
