Cooking in the kitchen and experimenting with a world of different flavors and dishes is what is fun about owning your own house. Today for example we are taking a look at one particular kitchen gadget which is simple and diverse in the way it is used: a Mortar and Pestle.

What is a Mortar and Pestle?

A Mortar and Pestle is a kitchen utensil that consists of two parts: the Mortar- a bowl which is usually made out of stone or wood, and the Pestle- a blunt object used to crush and grind ingredients. As well as its use in the food industry, this handy little gadget was also used widely in the medical world and for construction too. It is one of the oldest prices of kitchen equipment ever recorded and is still used widely today for a multitude of things.

Pesto is an Italian style sauce that is used for many different pasta dishes, fish and chicken, and other meals too. Pesto is a super simple recipe to create and once you have some in the fridge you can use it for a lot of different healthy meals for you and your family. All you need is some basil, Parmesan, garlic, oil and pine nuts to make a gorgeous, herb-y and flavorful sauce. Simply add all ingredients to the Mortar and Pestle and grind it all into a thick paste. Once done, you can boil some pasta, mix in the pesto and top with Parmesan cheese for a simple weeknight meal.

If you are looking for the ultimate party pleaser and a dish you can add to almost any summer meal, it has to be Guacamole. Guacamole is the perfect summer dip, and it can be used and enjoyed with tacos, fajitas, nachos and more. Simply grind up a couple of Avocados with some tomato, onion, lime and coriander. Spice Mixes are the perfect example of how to utilize this kitchen gadget, because it will allow you to create some wonderful flavor combinations to add a unique flare to any meal you cook. Mix together herbs and spices and grind them together for amazing rubs and seasonings. One example of a seasoning you can create with your mortar and pestle is a tandoori spice mix which consists of:

  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper

Hummus

If you want a chunkier, more rustic version of everyone’s favorite dip, a mortar and pestle can be a great way to make a stunning hummus dip which will lighten up any dish at your table. To create an amazing hummus all you need to do is gather the following ingredients:

  • 1 can chickpeas, drained and dried
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tbsp tahini
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

To create a zesty and herby hummus this summer, start off by grinding up the garlic cloves with your mortar and pestle. Once the garlic has been ground up, you can add half of the chickpeas and start to grind them up. Add the tahini paste and the rest of the chickpeas and smooth until a thick paste is formed. Add salt and lemon to taste.

Flavored Salt

Flavoured salt is something which is pretty popular with cooks and it can be a really great way for you to add some extra flavour to a simply seasoned steak or chicken breast. However when you buy flavoured salt from the supermarket it can be a little costly and there is no real reason to spend the extra for it this year. Instead of paying for flavoured salt, all you need to do is mix some of your favourite herbs and grind it with course salt in your mortar and pestle. For example for a winning garlic salt you can use for any meal; simple grind 1 part garlic powder and 1 part see salt.

Curry paste

One of the best ways to use your mortar and pestle for the win is for curries. Curry dishes are full of flavour and spice and this is what makes them taste phenomenal on our plates. For an amazing tikka masala curry paste this is what you will need:

  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 2 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

For this recipe simply grind all of the spices together and then mix with 2 tsp water to create a thick paste which will coat your meat in the pan. You can add more or less water depending on the consistency you get in the bowl.

Remember that it’s best to get a good quality Mortar and Pestle, and granite is always a great choice because it won’t absorb the flavors of the food you use it with, won’t grind down too much over time and is also just a lovely addition to your kitchen. This is certainly a kitchen gadget that has a lot to offer!
