George Dickel – Tennessee’s Finest Quality Sippin’ Whisky

I received a complimentary tour and goodie bag in exchange for featuring the location. All opinions are my own.

We take our time. We do things the right way. It’s our craft, it’s our pride, and it may be the finest whisky you’ll ever have the luck to sip.

Tennessee’s Finest Quality Sippin’ Whisky is made just a hop, skip, and a jump down the road from the place my family calls home. Tucked away in a tiny ol’ nook in Tullahoma, Tennessee, George A. Dickel & Co. is a must-stop if you’re ever in the area. I was blessed with the opportunity to visit for a tour and even a few sips of whisky!

A Little History on the missing ‘e’…

I know you’re thinking that I forgot the ‘e’ in the word “whisky”; however, George A. Dickel kept to the Scottish tradition of spelling and it’s been that way ever since. Our tour guide, Sharon, was very knowledgeable about the history of George Dickel as well as the day-to-day production. She compared the process areas to a kitchen. The process is fascinating from start to finish. It’s amazing that a crew of only 29 people completes the job! One of my favorite aspects of the company is that things are still done by-hand.

The atmosphere wraps you up in one word – simple. I don’t mean simple in the way of being plain but more of the idea that the distillery isn’t over-complicated or elaborate. They could easily transition over to modern technology and make the process “easier”; however, they embrace the attitude that it worked for George so why fix it if it ain’t broke!?

George Dickel Barrels
A sneak peek at the interior of the barrel house. Each building is one-story and stores the barrels until ready to bottle. In the U.S., the white oak barrels can only be used once so after being bottled, the barrels are sent to Scotland for further use in other liquors, wines, etc.

The Tour

The tour is approximately an hour long and $10 per person over the age of 21. Guests under 21 years of age are free. A complimentary tasting completes your tour (of course, you must be 21+). Tours are available 7 days a week – excluding major holidays.

George A. Dickel preferred to work in the winter months because of the cold making the batch taste better. To be able to produce the same quality product, the company now chills the whisky before undergoing the charcoal-mellowing process. Dickel is the only Tennessee distillery to chill their product and creates an end result of a smoother sip.

A View of the Gift Shop

The gift shop is a welcoming place full of assorted George Dickel- and Tennessee-themed products. You will instantly fall in love with the tee designs, handmade products (made by employees from barrels!), and all of the memorabilia that will remind you of this cozy place that’s hidden in Cascade Hollow.

Our Goody Bag!

When I got home, I opened up this Dickel-themed gift bag full of goodies! I am grateful for the opportunity to have somewhere full of history, flavor, and that good ol’ downhome hospitality nearby to visit from time to time. We will be heading back in May to attend their Porch Sessions. These are ticket-only events for ages 21+ featuring live music from fantastic artists such as Dustin Lynch, LOCASH, Maddie & Tae, etc.
