How Can You Live A More Sustainable Life?

How can you live a more sustainable life and help our world?

There’s an inconvenient truth about the modern world, and that’s that we all need to think about the impact that we’re having on the natural world. Life in the 21st century might seem convenient, but there’s a cost to that convenience. If we want to ensure that the future is bright for our children and grandchildren, then we better shape up. Luckily, it has never been easier to live a sustainable lifestyle as it is right now. Below, we take a look at a few tried and tested methods that’ll significantly reduce your carbon footprint.

Spot Your Flaws

First thing’s first: you’ve got to take a look at where your current environmental flaws. There are many ways that you could have an impact on the planet, but you’ll only know how you’re specifically causing harm by interrogating your lifestyle. Even people who think that they’re more or less doing right by the world usually trip up somewhere. By looking at your overall impact, you’ll be able to figure out how you need to change.

Travel Options

Who doesn’t love to travel? You’re exploring new places, meeting people, throwing off the shackles of boring everyday life — it’s fun! However, it’s always worth remembering that travel can be hugely detrimental to the environment. This sometimes takes people by surprise; they think that traveling is a naturally progressive and forward-thinking activity. But this isn’t the case. If you take one long haul flight, for instance, then you’ll already have used up all of your ‘allotted’ share of the earth’s resources for an entire year. So look at making some changes. Traveling overland, be it via train or bus, is much much better for the environment

On the Menu

We all enjoy a good slab of meat from time to time. But take a look at just how much energy is used during the growing process, and you might just think about tucking into that hamburger. The water needed to make a hamburger, for example, is equivalent to a month’s worth of showers. A month’s worth! That’s crazy. Now, you might be asking too much of yourself to adopt a vegetarian or vegan diet, so if that’s the case, take the pressure off by simply reducing your meat intake. A couple of days each without meat will make a huge difference. There really are a lot of health and delicious non-meat recipes out there that’ll have you eating well!

Getting Around

As well as the food that we eat, the biggest impact most of us have on the natural world is simply getting around. If you have a long commute in your car to and from work, then you’ll be burning through a lot of fossil fuels each year, just to make it from A to B! One way to make this more sustainable is to switch to an electric vehicle, which is much better for the environment. You can even get an electric vehicle charger installed on your property by Suncoast Energy, so you can charge your new car right from the comfort of your own home. These types of vehicles are the future; make the transition now, and get ahead of the curve.

Consumer Power

One of the biggest ways to adapt your influence on the world is through your wallet or purse. There are companies who don’t care about the environment in the slightest; all they want is your money. And then there are companies who want to push the world in a more sustainable direction. It’s the latter that you should be giving your business to. We all have an impact, and it’s not always in a direct way. You might not be cutting down rainforests, but if you’re essentially paying someone else to do it for you, then it’s not as if your conscience should be clear. Investigate the eco-credentials of the companies that you give money to, and make sure that they care as much as you do.

Get Involved

Now, don’t get us wrong: your individual choices do make a huge impact on the state of the earth. As well as having a direct impact, through your actions, you’ll also be helping to inspire others, and that’s something that shouldn’t be overlooked. But it is true that we might need to do more than change our habits behind closed doors. For the biggest impact, we need to apply pressure to other parties, so they know that they need to make changes. If you want to ramp up your environmental goodness, then look at joining an activist group. They have a lot of successes — indeed, virtually all the environmental progress has been a result of the actions of pressure groups.

Time in Nature

Some people begin their environmental journey with a lot of enthusiasm, but then eventually it fades away. And one of the reasons this happens is because they forget what they’re fighting for. If they give up meat, eventually all they see is a salad on their plate; they don’t see the reasons why they’ve made that choice. One way to stay on top of your environmental goals is to spend some time in nature. You’ll be much more likely to make changes that will have a positive impact on the world if you’re continually reminded of how beautiful and awesome it is.

Stay Up to Date

We understand a fair amount of the ways in which humans influence the world, but there’s much more that we don’t know. As such, it’s recommended that you stay on top of the latest environmental news — you might just discover new ways to live a more sustainable life.

Make it a Priority

Finally, make it a priority! This is the great battle that the world is facing — indeed, it might just be the most battle of all time. This is an existential threat of our extinction that we’re talking about here. Make the changes, and encourage your friends and family to do the same. It is the right thing to do!

  1. I love these ideas. And I think it’s really important to spend more time in nature so as to not get so disconnected from taking care of the Earth.
