Using your grill in the winter may seem like a strange idea, after all, the weather is colder, it may even be snowing where you live – but don’t let that put you off, you can still enjoy home grilled food all year round with these simple tips. So crack open your primo grill and get cooking!
In the summer months, your grill may live in the middle of the garden or on the edge of the patio but to have the most shelter and get the most out of it in the winter you will want to keep it close to home. The best place to set it up is next to the wall of the house, this will offer you some protection from blustery winds. Just remember to stay away from overhangs that could be a risk of fire and never to grill in an enclosed space.
Cook smaller cuts
To cook quickly on your grill you will want to keep the cuts of meat that you use small. Stick to thinner steaks, pork chops, kebabs or butterflied chicken breasts as they will cook in a shorter amount of time. For larger items such as ribs, you may wish to start them in the oven and then finish them on the grill to soak up all those grill flavours in a fraction of the time.
Stock up on more fuel
Your grill will use a lot more fuel to cook the same amount of food in the winter and so you can expect to use around half as much again as you typically would in the summer. Keep a spare tank or two of gas close by in case you run out.
Heat your grill up first
Although heating your grill up is important all year round it is most important in the colder winter months. Warm your grill up slowly to allow any frozen parts to defrost and to help stop things from sticking. Your grill will take a little longer to heat up in the winter so expect to add an additional 5 minutes or so onto your prep time.
Grill in the day time
The temperature often drops dramatically in the evening when the sun goes down so you may want to consider prepping grilled meat ahead in the day time to make the most of the slightly warmer sunny days. You’ll also be able to see a lot more easily!
Perhaps the biggest barrier to grilling outdoors is that people often don’t want to stand outside in the cold. Thankfully this can be easily rectified by wearing the right clothing! Layer up to stay nice and warm, wear thick socks to keep your feet toast and remember to wear a hat as you lose most of your body heat through your head. You may also want to wear gloves to keep your fingers nice and warm, you can buy fingerless pairs if you are worried about hand dexterity.
