How To Prevent Rust On Your Metal Roof

Metal is an excellent material for your roof because it’s durable and affordable. It’s important that you stay on top of roof maintenance because any gaps and cracks will let water in and cause a lot of damage to your home. This is less likely with metal roofing, but you do have to stay on top of rust.

Once the roof starts to rust and degrade, you will need to repair your roof right away before the problem gets serious. However, prevention is the best cure here and there are some simple things you can do to stop your metal roof from getting rusty.

Choose The Right Kind Of Metal

When you first have your metal roof installed, consider the materials carefully, especially if you live in a wet climate where rust is more likely to be an issue. Galvanized metal is one of the more popular choices but you would actually be better off using galvalume metal roofing instead. It is similar to galvanized metal but it is actually self-healing. Any discoloration or rust around the edges will not spread and it will repair itself, as long as the rust isn’t too extensive. This makes it so much easier to prevent serious rust issues on your metal roof.

Paint The Roof

One of the best ways to protect your metal roof from rust is to paint it. Before you do this, you should clean any weathered areas with a wire brush. When the surface is perfectly smooth and free from dirt, use some tar-based paint to give the roof another layer of protection. This will prevent rust from getting inside and causing any damage to the inside of your roof. Another benefit here is that paint can be a great waterproofing agent, so you won’t have to worry about leaks as much.

Keep The Roof Clean And Avoid Moisture Build-Up

A clean roof will prevent rust because moisture build-up and dirt are two factors that cause rust. If you make it a part of your regular roof maintenance, then you will avoid moisture build-up completely. You can use soap and water to clean the roof regularly. Make sure to clean off any loose dirt or debris that might get into the cracks and cause damage later on when rust starts to form there.

Check For Rust Regularly And Clean It Off

The best way to stay on top of rust is by doing a regular check and clean. There are two ways you can do this; the first – and easiest – is to simply go up there once in a while and check for any rusts, then clean it off. The second method is to do a thorough inspection of the whole roof at least once every spring. You can get up there with one of those telescopic poles that are easy to maneuver around the roof to make sure you cover every spot. This way, if you do have any areas where rust has started, you will be able to fix it right away before it spreads.

Once the rust sets in and starts to spread, it can cause extensive damage to your roof. But if you take these preventative measures, you can protect the roof for years to come.
