Little girl flying in a box with balloons symbolizes how children can follow their dreams

As children, we’re all asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I don’t know about y’all but I’m not sure I could still give a proper answer to that question. My parents never encouraged me to have dreams; rather, they instilled a good work ethic and the idea that working and providing for my family was all I needed to do. Due to hardships and personal experiences, I lost that childlike free spirit early on.

Now that I have my own children, my point of view and approach to encouraging dreams has significantly changed. I’ve allowed my children to explore in their childlike ways to discover their own path — without being strictly influenced by others. Their passions and abilities all can help us guide our children to follow their dreams while remaining realistic.

Here are six ideas for how to encourage your children to dream:

Dream yourself!

Even as adults, we’re allowed to continue dreaming! I’m a firm believer that it’s never too late to find their passions. When we are living our own adventures, we act as an inspiration to our children to do the same.

Create a bucket list

It’s never too early to create a bucket list. Personally, I’ve always found that checking items off that I’ve completed help me feel more accomplished. It creates a timeline for kids to look back on someday to tell their own children about the activities and events they experienced. Include pictures, ticket stubs, dried & pressed flowers, etc.

Allow free time

Between school and extracurricular activities, kids spend a large amount of their time in a structured routine. Giving them time to explore their own interests will allow their minds to wander and encourage self-discovery!

Not all dreams need to be related to an ultimate goal

I’ve read quite a few articles and books that argue for all actions of our lives to be related to our ultimate goals. Respectfully, I disagree. My parents used to think that some of my activities and interests were “wasteful”. Reading has always been my favorite leisure activity; but I don’t strictly read books that are related to my career. I have a deep appreciation and love for thriller books! So let your children’s dreams wander and take them some pretty amazing places!

Introduce inspirational dreamers

If it weren’t for the dreamers, there are many things we wouldn’t have in our world today. It’s those inspirational dreamers who do different, inspiring, and significant things. Search online or check out your local libraries for books that introduce your children to these inspiring people!

Create a dream-safe environment

Make your home and lives a safe space of creativity and dreams. It’s important to remember to not get caught up in what society wants or expects from us. Be spontaneous. Don’t be afraid to make a mess! Life isn’t perfect — and we don’t need to set a precedent with our children that perfect is the status quo.
