It wasn’t until about ten years ago that I got to experience a King Cake for the first time. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. But that is definitely on mine and my husband’s bucket list! I’m all about experiencing the event and tasting a cake firsthand!

What exactly is a King Cake?

Today, most people associate the King Cake with Fat Tuesday as well as the beads and alcohol-fueled fun. But the cake actually links back to Three Kings Day – an event that takes place 12 days after Christmas. The event represents the Three Wise Men who came to visit Jesus and bestow the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This day is also referred to as Epiphany. The French brought this cake to Louisiana in the 1870’s and has become a signature symbol of all the fun that takes place in New Orleans.

The cake, itself, is a buttery pastry in the shape of a ring or circle. It’s covered in icing and decorated with gold, green, and purple sprinkles or “sand” as many bakeries refer to the finer sprinkles. You’ll find some bakeries who offer a treat that resembles bread while others are more cake-like. The center is often filled with cream cheese, mixed with cinnamon and vanilla.

As with everything about this cake, the choice of colors also represent their own part. The green represents faith, purple symbolizes power, and the gold/yellow is for justice. Inside, there is also a plastic baby hidden. Whether it’s placed there to represent Jesus or a symbol of luck or prosperity, it’s said that the person who gets that piece of cake will experience good luck for the year.
