To country music icon Martina McBride, cooking and singing aren’t all that different. “When I make something delicious, I want to share it, which is a lot like sharing my music with an audience,” she says. “Cooking is my love language.”
When she’s not on stage or in the studio, Martina is likely experimenting in the kitchen. Growing up on a farm in Kansas, she began helping in the kitchen at an early age, preparing ingredients at her mother’s side. Meals and stories were shared daily around the table. It’s a tradition she continues with her husband and three daughters as often as she can because real life is worth celebrating.
With her new cookbook Martina’s Kitchen Mix: My Recipe Playlist for Real Life, you’ll find your own invitation to step inside Martina’s kitchen and sample more than 150 of her favorite dishes, whether the recipes were passed down from relatives or tested to perfection by Martina herself.
Whip up her favorite Weekend Brunch menu, serving Cheddar Biscuits with Bacon (page 25), Baked French Toast with Pecan Crumble and Blackberry-Maple Syrup (page 32), and a Sparkling Grapefruit Mimosa (page 57). Say “cheers” to happy hour with a Blackberry-Lemon Gin & Tonic (page 40) while enjoying Whipped Feta Crostini with Roasted Garlic Tomatoes and Fresh Herbs (page 43) and Baked Olive Cheese Dip (page 78).
Find balance with healthier fare like Thai Slaw with Peanut Dressing (page 102) and Creamy Chicken Tortilla Soup (page 131). Make memories during dinner while noshing on Chicken Braised in Sun-Dried Tomato Cream Sauce (page 166) and Smashed New Potatoes with Lemon (page 189). And when it’s time to indulge, go for Fresh Apple Cake with Homemade Caramel Sauce (page 222) or No-Bake Peanut Butter-Chocolate Cookies (page 232).
“I hope you enjoy this book and cook from it often,” Martina says, “I encourage you to start thinking about cooking ‘outside the lines’. That’s what makes cooking fun! It’s my biggest wish that a few of these dishes will make it onto your list of new favorites.”
