USA Today Bestselling Author – Caroline Fardig
An Ellie Matthews Novel
Ellie Matthews is tired of her fifteen minutes of fame. After consulting on a high-profile murder case a few months ago, she wants nothing more than to fade back into obscurity and resume her life as a mild-mannered college professor. But when a family friend goes missing, Ellie finds herself thrust back into the grisly world of crime scene investigation.
It isn’t long before Ellie’s young friend is found murdered and her death is tied to a previously unsolved case. Based on the cryptic poems left on the victims, the department soon realizes that the killer’s vendetta is against them.
It takes all Ellie has to push her personal feelings aside and partner with Detective Nick Baxter one more time. The duo must stop at nothing to catch a vengeful serial killer before it’s too late.
An Eye For An Eye is book two of the Ellie Matthews novels; however, it easily stands on its own. I have not read the first book, A Bitter Past, but fell right into the characters and their stories. Ellie is the typical protective older sister when it comes to her sister Rachel and Rachel’s son, Nate. She has a slight mothering aspect to her personality that starts to show through when their lives become endangered.
Ellie has given up her days of investigating horrendous crimes; but, when a close friend is found murdered with evidence linking her to another murder victim, Ellie is drawn back in to help find the killer. The clues lead to a Rachel being kidnapped and potentially the next victim. Along with Detective Nick Baxter, Ellie is ordered by the killer to solve his mother’s murder and clear his father’s name. All of the clues keep leading them back to one conclusion: the original conviction was correct.
This is a steady-paced thriller that keeps you turning page after page to find the answers to your questions. Caroline Fardig has definitely done her research on forensics and includes detail without making it confusing or complicated. I would have liked to have seen the killer’s psyche a little more developed but felt satisfied overall when I reached the end of the book. The first book in the series is now on my “to-buy” list for more insight to Ellie’s approach to personal relationships and hope that a third installment can build on this aspect!
I received an advanced copy and wish I’d been able to fit it into my schedule sooner – definitely recommended for anyone who loves a good mystery and thrill!
