The Best Chicken Fried Steak Recipe:
About a month ago, a regular reader sent me a message asking for a Chicken Fried Steak recipe. I couldn’t say no because this is one of our family’s favorite comfort foods — especially my youngest! I have been guilty of buying them premade from the freezer section to save on time. The rainy weekend gave me the opportunity to try these out and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
Do you enjoy them for breakfast or dinner? The correct answer is: both! There is no “wrong” time to enjoy one of this savory recipe. Throw a steak on a bun and enjoy a delicious sandwich. My mom likes hers with mustard, pickle, and onion. What would you put on yours?
As a child, I was always curious as to why this was called “chicken” when it is made with steak. The chicken name comes from the type of breading and the method of frying is similar. After dredging the steak through flour, you will dip it into eggs, then back through the flour. Cooking it in the air fryer is eliminates all of the extra calories you get from deep-frying. It’s a win-win!

What to Use to Make Air Fryer Chicken Fried Steak:
- Your choice of Air Fryer (I like this one!)
- Cooking Spray
- 2 Bowls (1 for flour and 1 for eggs)
- Cubed Steak
- Flour
- Eggs
- Morton’s Nature Seasoning
- Milk
- Butter
- Salt & Pepper

Tips for Making the Best Chicken Fried Steak:
- Pound the cube steaks. Use a meat tenderizer, rubber mallet, or rolling pin to do this.
- Using your hand, press the first dredge of flour into the meat. This will help keep the breading stuck to the steaks.
- If you want to make more than one batch, place the steaks in a 13×9 glass baking pan covered loosely with foil in a 200°F oven.
- Allow your steaks to sit at room temp for about 30 minutes prior to cooking.
- Like a little heat in your steaks? Add a teaspoon of cayenne pepper at a time, until you reach the desired level of heat.
Side Options to Consider:
- Rosemary Garlic Mashed Potatoes
- Mashed Sweet Potatoes
- Bacon-Wrapped Asparagus
- Caesar Salad
- Crunchy Broccoli Slaw

How to Make Your Chicken Fried Steaks:
Beat the two eggs and set aside. Stir the natures seasoning into the flour.
Toss the steaks in the flour, then the egg and then back in the flour to fully bread them.
Place in air fryer basket and spray with oil. Cook on 390 for 11 minutes. Flip and cook for 3 more minutes.
While steaks are cooking, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the milk, salt and pepper. Whisk in a tablespoon of flour at a time until desired thickness of gravy is achieved. I used 3 tablespoons.
Remove steaks from air fryer and serve with gravy.
If you want to make another batch or two, place the cooked steaks in a 13 x 9 glass baking pan and loosely cover with foil in a 200°F oven.
