A delicious chocolate layer cake deserves the best frosting — and I have just the recipe! When it comes to putting the final touches on a cake, I’m not fond of what makes it “pretty”. I want the flavor to knock your socks off! Frosting makes or breaks a cake — and this one will make any flavor of cake absolutely divine!

What makes this recipe “perfect”?

I’ll be the first to admit that I might have a chocolate addiction. So when I say I’ve tried a lot of frosting recipes, I actually mean a ton. Some are too buttery while others have been too dry. Neither leave me feeling fulfilled.

This recipe is perfect because the frosting is creamy, fluffy, not overly-sweet, holds its shape without melting off the cake, and fulfills your chocolate craving.

The perfect chocolate buttercream frosting does require a few *special* ingredients:

Tips & Tricks for the Perfect Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

  • Using “room temperature” butter can vary, depending on our kitchens. I find it best to begin creaming the butter when it’s still cool, yet soft to the touch. Overly-warm butter will make for a frosting that melts right off the cake. A cool, soft butter will help maintain the shape.
  • Go slow with adding the milk and powdered sugar. Finding the right measurements can be tricky. It’s not an exact science because of how the room temperature and humidity levels affect the frosting.
  • Use a good quality vanilla. Don’t skimp and use imitation. Trust me. This makes a HUGE difference!

Don't cover your cakes with any ol' frosting - create a masterpiece with the perfect chocolate buttercream frosting!

  • 1 c. unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ½ c. cocoa powder
  • 16-oz. powdered sugar
  • 1-2 T. whole milk
  • 1 t. real vanilla extract


Mix the butter and cocoa powder in a large bowl until well blended.

Add the powdered sugar and mix on low-speed until all of the sugar is combined.

Stir in milk and vanilla extract, if using, to reach desired consistency.
