Spring is in full swing, which means warmer weather, longer days, and more family fun. And while you’re likely already occupied with cleaning your home, it’s important to do a little spring cleaning with your wellness this season, as well. If you’re not sure where to begin, here are a few items to add to your family’s spring wellness checklist.
Assess Dental Hygiene Habits
Whether you celebrate Easter or not, spring is the season for sweets. It’s finally warm enough to go out for ice cream, there’s chocolate on every store shelf… You name it and there’s a sweet in that flavor! That makes spring the perfect time for assessing your sweet habits and dental routine. We’ve only got one set of teeth — minus the baby teeth that start coming in around six months after we’re born — and we need to take care of them. So make sure your family (especially your kids!) are practicing good dental hygiene, and schedule dental checkups during spring break with the likes of Smile Connections Family Dental.
Be Prepared for Spring Colds
Spring colds are more common than you might think. It’s easy to mistake these for allergies, so make sure you keep a sharp eye! And if you’re concerned about a symptom like coughing, go visit your doctor. Coughs are one of the most common illnesses diagnosed in urgent care centers, so it’s always safe to be prepared to deal with them during this transitional season. Stocking up on allergy medication and vitamin C is always a good idea, too. Make sure those indoor contaminants are taken care of, too. Even carpets that look clean can hold almost one pound of dirt per square yard.
Schedule a Checkup
It’s recommended to see your doctor for a general checkup at least once every year. Why not do it this spring? This can be an especially good idea if you’re considering getting back into a sport during the warmer weather or if you have a pre-existing condition like arthritis (which 54.4 million adults have) that crops up in warmer weather. A spring checkup can ensure you’re good to go for all of your outdoor spring plans.
Spend Time Outside
Speaking of the great outdoors, it’s great to actually get outdoors during the spring! It’s important to get some quality time in nature, and it’s fun for the whole family. Consider a family bike ride or nature walk. With a 46% increase in the number of people riding bikes, bike share programs have popped up in a number of cities across the nation. Why not get your family in on the fun? Not only is it a great way to get some casual exercise in, it’s an adventure for everyone.
Consider a Digital Detox
It’s easy for the kids to come home and look at their phones all night. But since spring is a time for cleaning up, it could be a good idea to clean up your family’s digital habits, too. Consider having one or two nights per week where nobody uses their phones. Family game nights, evening walks, and even family movie nights can be a great way to get away from the screens and closer to each other. Spring is all about revitalization, and some time away from the digital world can help revitalize your whole household.
Of course, there’s much more to do this spring than the items on this checklist. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you’re thinking about renewal, revitalization, and your relationships with your family. Which item will you check off of your spring wellness checklist first?
